BASA - an initiative towards COMMUNITY TOURISM!

This initiative focusses on keeping the local needs, economy and architecture in mind such that the local people can own it and it can add value to the local fabric.

“BASA” in garhwali language is an expression to invite guests to your house for a night halt.

The idea behind the initiative is also to empower the local women. Women are considered to be the driving engine of garhwal region. This is going to be run by local SHG groups. The name of this local Village organisation is UNNATI. BASA consists of

a cottage with 4 rooms, a community kitchen, a tourism centre and a packaging and a selling unit of local produces and handicrafts.

Along with handling the stay, the women will also be engaged in production and packaging all the local village produce and crafts which will be sold to the tourists. The tourists will have an experience of the traditional culture of Khirsu.

The shop will also house native and traditional produces from across the district. BASA is located in the heart of village. Snow peaked mountains, forests, village life and local food, all can be experienced here.

A model inspiring Khirsu’s local economy & culture through home-stays

BASA cottage establishes an example for locals. As a model of homestay it inspires local to open up their spare house spaces as home-stays.

Such initiatives done and managed by locals

may help revitalise the local economy and allow authentic tourism which can help preserve the natural and cultural landscape of Khirsu.
